On Wednesday the Zweibrücken public prosecutor’s office announced it had issued an arrest warrant for a 26‑year‑old man accused of fatally attacking a train guard on a regional line near Landstuhl. The guard, aged 36, died from a brain haemorrhage caused by significant blunt force trauma to the head, as revealed by a preliminary autopsy.
Early investigations place the alleged assault on Monday at about 5:30 p.m. on the RE 4131 train traveling from Landstuhl to Homburg. Shortly after departure, the guard asked the man to leave the train because he could not produce a ticket. The suspect then struck the guard repeatedly with hard punches to the head. According to the prosecutor, no knife or other weapon was involved.
The guard lost consciousness during the attack, was treated and resuscitated on the train, and was taken to a hospital where he died the following morning. The suspect, who says he resides in Luxembourg, has no prior convictions or police records in Germany. Police are still analysing video footage and probing the suspect’s motive.
