After Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) also called for a ban on social‑media platforms for children, the deputy chair of the Green parliamentary group, Andreas Audretsch, urged a more nuanced debate.
The Greens will not simply decide whether minors aged 14, 16 or older should be barred, nor whether addictive algorithms should be outlawed. Audretsch told RTL and ntv that this question must be discussed openly. He added that the party wants to talk directly with the young people affected: “As Greens we plan to convene a youth forum and, together with teenagers, examine precisely how best to address this issue”.
In outlining an implementation strategy, Audretsch described a dual approach. On one hand, there will be strong requirements and clear legal rules. On the other, the Green party emphasizes media literacy and education, aiming to teach young people how to navigate these platforms and the content they encounter.
