Green Youth Accuses Greens of Inaction on Racism Ahead of Hanau Anniversary

On the sixth anniversary of the Hanau attack, the Green Youth accused the parent party of not taking a strong enough stand against racism and extremism. Green Youth leader Luis Bobga told the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” that it is hard for him to take seriously when Green politicians say Hanau must never happen again. He criticised the party for offering flowery rhetoric about diversity and anti‑racism whenever convenient, while repeatedly postponing necessary police reforms and measures to prevent extremism-even when the party had the capacity to act.

Bobga also slammed the Hessian Greens for their handling of the case. He said that, in Hesse, they bore governmental responsibility as delays in the investigation and minimisation of mistakes occurred. “Those who promise solidarity must show it” he added, pointing out that in Hanau loyalty seemed directed more toward the coalition partner than toward the victims of racist violence. For the Greens, Bobga argues, polished Instagram reels and crafted statements have never been enough; real learning from Hanau would require decisive political action.

The incident itself took place on 19 February 2020 in Hanau, when a 43‑year‑old German shot nine people for racist motives, then killed his mother and himself.
