The deputy chair of the SPD parliamentary group, Esra Limbacher, urged his faction and the party to display more willingness for change and greater courage in pursuing reforms. “The major reforms have almost always been launched by social democrats. That should still be our claim today” he told “Bild” in its Thursday edition. “Germany remains strong only if we are bold enough to truly tackle change”.
Limbacher characterized the fiscal policy adjustments overseen by Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil (SPD) as a “significant step”. He added that the entire federal government faces higher expectations amid global disruptions. In turn, he criticized Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) and called for genuine reform readiness and “more pragmatism”. “Those who handle a reform debate like an elephant in a porcelain shop will end up shocked by the shards” he said.
He noted that Merz’s current approval ratings lag behind those of his predecessor, Olaf Scholz (SPD). “A flawless presence on the international stage alone isn’t enough” Limbacher observed.
