Nouripour Urges Greater Autonomy for Greens’ Top Leaders as Polls Stagnate

Former Green Party chairman Omid Nouripour has urged that, given the party’s stagnant poll numbers at the national level, its leadership needs more “legroom”. “We have to give our leaders more room to breathe” he told T‑Online on Friday. “At the federal level the party hasn’t made decisive moves yet in some areas. Too much inner balancing is still being sought”.

He added that the recent election campaigns have shown the party should play to its strengths. “In Baden-Württemberg the focus is different from what we see in Berlin or Hesse. When we concentrate on our individual strengths, we succeed” Nouripour explained.

Nouripour also called for greater patience. “I experienced in 2005 how we were forced out of government. Such a break should not be underestimated. It takes time to re‑establish equilibrium” he said. He noted that a basic stability in the leadership is beneficial, as the party chairs and parliamentary group leaders work closely together.
