Former SPD MP Sönke Rix Set to Lead Germany’s Federal Agency for Civic Education

Sönke Rix, the former SPD member of the Bundestag, is set to be appointed by the federal cabinet on Wednesday as the new president of the Federal Agency for Civic Education (Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung). According to the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland, citing sources within government circles, Rix-50, from Schleswig‑Holstein-served in Parliament from 2005 to 2025, most recently as deputy parliamentary group leader. He was a member of the Parliamentary Left and concentrated largely on education, media and cultural matters.

The outgoing president, Thomas Krüger, retired in early September of last year. The prospect of Rix taking over has been apparent for some time, but the official appointment appears to have stalled because the agency is still searching for a vice‑president from the Union. It is not yet clear whether that position has been filled.
