Bundestag Vice President Omid Nouripour of the Greens has said he supports better protection for German soldiers in the Middle East.
He told RTL and ntv that “the German soldiers who have been fired upon, not directly personally, but in the areas where they were-such as northern Iraq-are, to the best of my knowledge, now being protected as well as possible”. He added that Germany will need to determine how it can also ramp up its presence in those locations.
France has moved an aircraft carrier into the Mediterranean, demonstrating how a large presence can be maintained with minimal effort. England has also stepped up, dispatching helicopters for drone‑defence. In both cases, the aim is not to participate in the war but to safeguard their own interests and personnel. “We should adopt the same approach” he said. “Therefore there is currently no compelling reason to deploy a ship elsewhere”.
