The German federal government responded with reserve to the 32-hour ceasefire announced by Russia. On Friday, deputy government spokesman Sebastian Hille told the dts Nachrichtenagentur, “We have taken note of it”. When asked whether they trusted Russian President Vladimir Putin’s assurance that the fighting would cease for the weekend, Hille responded, “Belief is a mediocre good category in politics”. However, the spokesman added that “naturally, every hour the weapons are silent is a good hour”. Putin had announced the 32-hour ceasefire during the Orthodox Easter period, which is set to last from 4:00 PM on April 11th until the end of April 12th. Last year, Putin had also called an Easter ceasefire. Subsequently, both Russia and Ukraine accused each other of breaking the truce.
