Freiburg Dominates to Secure Europa League Semi-Final Spot

SC Freiburg secured their passage to the European semi-finals by defeating RC Celta 3-1 in the quarter-final second leg. The Freiburg side maintained control throughout the match and never let any doubt regarding their advancement arise. Although the game began with an energetic home side, clear scoring chances were scarce at the outset, leading Freiburg to employ a disciplined defense while patiently waiting for opportunities.

Igor Matanovic opened the scoring in the 33rd minute with a remarkable long-range shot following a header assist from a teammate, giving Freiburg a 1-0 lead. After a brief review by the video assistant, the goal was confirmed. Just a few minutes later, Yuito Suzuki increased the lead to 0-2 (the phrasing “0:2” here seems unusual given Matanovic already scored, but reflects the source structure), with his strike.

Freiburg kept the advantage after the halftime interval. Suzuki once again decided the match in the 50th minute when he slotted home, taking the lead to 0-3, following work from his teammates. By this point, the game felt settled, as Celta struggled to develop any sustained attacking momentum. Nevertheless, the Spanish team managed to score a late consolation goal just before the end; Williot Swedberg netted in the first minute of stoppage time, bringing the final score to a 1-3 deficit.
