Kiesewetter Calls for European Security Pact, Sees Shift Away from US Alliance

Defence and foreign policy politician Roderich Kiesewetter (CDU) is advocating for a complete strategic overhaul for both Germany and Europe, proposing the creation of a European alternative to NATO and suggesting a significant shift away from reliance on American allies. Speaking to the news magazine “Focus”, the CDU Bundestag representative stated that “we must say goodbye to the Americans as an alliance partner”. Kiesewetter argued that Europe must now build a replacement for the transatlantic alliance, even incorporating European states that are not members of the EU or NATO. During an appearance on the “Machtmenschen” podcast, he suggested that an effort should be made to organize European security and a European NATO involving countries such as the UK, Norway, Iceland, Ukraine, and Turkey. When addressing Europe’s handling of Russia, Kiesewetter pointed the finger squarely at Germany, claiming the Federal Republic is “the mentally weakest country in Europe”. His comments drew criticism from Friedrich Merz (CDU), who specifically criticized Kiesewetter for failing to provide the Taurus cruise missile to Ukraine.
