Leipzig Shootout: Authorities Classify Attack on Crowded Square as “Amokfahrt”

According to reports from Saxony’s Interior Minister, Armin Schuster (CDU), and the responsible public prosecutor’s office, the incident that occurred in the city center of Leipzig has been classified as a “ramming attack”. An official representative of the investigative authorities confirmed on Monday evening that there are no grounds for interpreting the event in any other way, nor are there indications of further participants.

The 33-year-old man who was apprehended has been described by Minister Schuster as the perpetrator of the attack. Investigators stated that he was born, raised, and continues to reside in the region.

The authorities are investigating the case for two counts of murder and multiple charges of attempted murder. The incident took place late Monday afternoon, around 5 PM. Initially, two people were killed, and Leipzig Mayor Burkhard Jung (SPD) later updated the count, stating there were three individuals who were severely injured.

The suspected attacker reportedly drove an SUV, entering the area from the busy Augustusplatz into the Grimmaische Straße before speeding toward the Markt.
