Christian Dürr, the outgoing chairman of the FDP, has called on the party’s future leadership to adopt a clearer ideological stance. Speaking to the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” (weekend edition), Dürr stated that the FDP should have been far more pointed earlier regarding the content it stood for, asserting that the party needs to find more courage-both in its subject matter and in how decisively it presents it.
Addressing stylistic criticisms sometimes leveled at the likely future party leader, Wolfgang Kubicki, Dürr advised combining strong communication with unambiguous factual positioning. He stressed that “rhetorical sharpness should be accompanied by content clarity”.
Regarding internal party fears that the FDP might shift to the right under Kubicki’s guidance, Dürr dismissed these concerns as unfounded. He noted that the debate about a shift has always been driven by external commentary. His own consistent belief has been that the FDP’s positions should not be defined by whether they fit within a left-right schema, but rather by the correctness of those positions themselves. Dürr concluded by stating that the FDP is substantively clearer than most other political parties.
