Paris Saint-Germain successfully defended their Champions League title by defeating Arsenal 4-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout. The final of the 2025/2026 season was memorable, as it was the first time in ten years that a Champions League final went into extra time after ending 1-1 at the 90-minute mark.
In front of 67,000 spectators, Arsenal started brilliantly, netting the opening goal in the sixth minute. PSG may have dominated possession early on, but they struggled to penetrate the tight London defense. The Gunners capitalized on a misstep by PSG captain Marquinhos. After a failed clearance attempt by the defender, the ball floated over Leandro Trossard directly into the path of Kai Havertz. The German forward drove in from the left flank, hammering the ball into the top corner under the crossbar. This made it the second final goal of Havertz’s career, following his decisive strike for Chelsea in 2021.
Despite falling behind early, PSG maintained control, often boasting over 75 percent possession. However, Luis Enrique’s side found little breakthrough against Arsenal’s deep defensive shape. Promising attackers like Ousmane Dembélé, Désiré Doué, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia were largely neutralized by the well-organized defense spearheaded by William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães. PSG’s few opportunities were without menace; Fabián Ruiz missed a clear chance following a pass from Doué, while Kvaratskhelia repeatedly failed to score against resolute defensive tackles, and Dembélé could not find a target from distance. Meanwhile, Arsenal remained dangerous on the counterattack. Just before halftime, Havertz was close to evening the score, but Marquinhos made a vital, high-stakes tackle to save the lead.
The second half saw PSG ramp up their pressure, playing with more directness and dynamism, intensifying their attempts to reach the penalty area. Arsenal held its discipline initially, but the defending champions’ attacks grew increasingly threatening. The game finally opened up after nearly an hour of play. In the 62nd minute, Kvaratskhelia broke into the box following a double pass and was clipped from behind by Cristhian Mosquera. Referee Daniel Siebert awarded a penalty, which Ousmane Dembélé converted calmly to level the score at 1-1. David Raya made the wrong corner selection and had no chance to defend.
The equalizer lifted PSG’s spirits, causing Arsenal to look slightly unsettled and forcing them to navigate several dangerous moments. Kvaratskhelia continued to be a source of chaos, notably having the lead briefly in the 76th minute after dribbling past Saliba with a strong solo effort, though his deflected shot only hit the left post.
Even as regulation time wound down, PSG was the more active side. Vitinha just missed a goal with a shot skimming past the defense by mere centimeters, while Arsenal struggled to create any opportunities for relief. Unfortunately, PSG suffered a setback shortly before the end when Dembélé had to be substituted due to muscular issues.
After the 90 minutes concluded with the score tied at 1-1-a scenario in a Champions League final not seen since the Madrid derby between Real and Atlético in 2016-the match proceeded to extra time.
The extra period saw an open exchange. Arsenal began trying to play more bravely forward, while PSG retained more possession. The best chance of extra time arrived in the 107th minute. Bradley Barcola broke through on the right flank and provided a cross into the penalty area. The substitute Gonçalo Ramos, lurking completely free, looked set to score, but Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya displayed stellar reflexes, sprinting from his goal to make a spectacular save and deny the winning goal.
Arsenal mainly generated chances through set pieces, led by Declan Rice, who delivered several dangerous free kicks into the box. However, PSG keeper Matvei Safonov remained vigilant. The match became increasingly defined by fatigue; Hincapié continued playing despite obvious discomfort, while PSG also had to forgo two important leaders with substitutions involving Vitinha and Marquinhos.
In the final moments of extra time, PSG pressed fiercely for a decisive edge, but Arsenal’s defense held firm. The London side defended with great passion, allowing few clear chances. Although Paris held more possession and initiated more attacks, they could not convert this pressure into a definitive advantage.
It was in the penalty shootout, in front of the Parisian crowd, that PSG held the stronger nerve. Arsenal’s Eberechi Eze missed, immediately followed by David Raya keeping Nuno Mendes’s shot. Ultimately, Arsenal’s Gabriel shot over the crossbar.
