In the third matchday of the 2. Bundesliga, 1. FC Heidenheim secured a dramatic 5-3 victory against Dynamo Dresden.
Dynamo Dresden took the lead in the 30th minute. Corner kick delivered by Dresden defender Jonas Sterner into the penalty area allowed Dresden striker Vincent Vermeij to score from three meters.
The home team responded in the 67th minute when Jan Schöppner equalized. After Michael Heule delivered a sharp cross from a corner, Schöppner scored with a header from four meters out into the far corner. Shortly afterward, Dresden defender Thomas Keller received a yellow-red card in the 69th minute for fouling Heidenheim’s Marcel Costly.
Dynamo Dresden regained the lead in the 73rd minute. Although Dresden midfielder Ben Bobzien was tackled in the box by Heidenheim’s Patrick Mainka and claimed a penalty, Ahmet Muhamedbegovic converted. Initially, Heidenheim goalkeeper Thomas Dähne managed to save the shot, but Bobzien recovered the ball and passed to Wagner, who hammered the ball into the left corner.
Heidenheim briefly found the equalizer in the 77th minute via an own goal from Dresden defender Friedrich Müller, who headed the ball into his own net from a corner kick by Heule.
Heidenheim then pulled ahead with a 3-2 lead in the 87th minute when Oualid Mhamdi hit a volley from 18 meters out into the bottom right corner after deflecting a blocked ball. Julian Niehues extended the lead shortly after in the 90th minute, scoring a header from a corner kick to make it 4-2.
Dresden managed a final surge, with Jonas Sterner scoring the fifth goal in injury time (7th minute of stoppage time). Sterner drew slightly toward the center from the left side and shot with his right foot from 16 meters. The ball was slightly deflected and ultimately slipped past Dähne into the net.
Other match results included Karlsruher SC defeating VfL Wolfsburg 2-5, and SpVgg Greuther Fürth beating Energie Cottbus 4-3.
