FC Augsburg has begun the 2026/27 Bundesliga season strongly with a commanding 3:0 victory over FC Schalke 04, who were making their return to the top division after three years away.
Augsburg took the lead relatively early in the match; in the 18th minute, Michael Gregoritsch converted a cross from Anton Kade inside the penalty area. Schalke, struggling to make a real impact against the solid Augsburg defense, faced continuous difficulty breaking the deadlock.
The situation deepened for the guests during the second half when Ron Schallenberg received a red card in the 62nd minute, following a last-ditch foul. Playing with ten men, Schalke was unable to sustain the necessary offensive pressure to counter the momentum of the home side. Anton Kade doubled the lead in the 79th minute, receiving a deep pass from Fabian Rieder and guiding the ball into the net off the inside of the post. Ribeiro sealed the victory for Augsburg in stoppage time.
Overall, FC Augsburg repeatedly controlled the flow of the match, successfully capitalizing on the vulnerabilities within Schalke’s defense. Although the Gelsenkirchen side created several promising chances, none proved sufficient to convert into goals. Augsburg’s goalkeeper, Dahmen, deserves special mention for delivering a strong performance, making several crucial saves against dangerous Schalke attempts.
