Ethicist Warns: AI-Generated Speeches Threaten Democratic Discourse and Human Creativity

Social ethicist Elmar Nass has issued a warning against the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to generate political speeches. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post,” he clarified that while employing AI to gather information or optimize specific phrases during the preparation of a speech is not inherently objectionable, the situation becomes problematic when one allows the AI to write entire blocks of text or even dictate complex thought processes and argumentative lines.

Nass cautions that if this trend continues, the AI would ultimately come to dominate political discourse-a development he views as an interference with democratic debate culture. “It fundamentally destroys the creativity inherent in political arguments,” he stated. The ethicist expressed a preference for politicians who present their arguments drawn from their own unique life experiences and perspectives, enabling genuine conversation. He insisted that political discourse must be driven by people, asserting that language is an expression of human beings and should not become merely the expression of machines.

This concern follows recent public scrutiny after Thuringian Minister President Mario Voigt (CDU) and Digital Minister Karsten Wildberger (CDU) faced criticism for several speeches and guest contributions that were reported to have been drafted with the aid of AI.
