Israel-Lebanon Peace Framework Achieved Amid Hezbollah Disarmament Talks

A framework agreement aimed at achieving a peace solution between Israel and Lebanon has been reached. This breakthrough followed several weeks of negotiations between high-ranking representatives from both nations held in Washington.

The agreed-upon terms stipulate that the Lebanese military forces should eventually re-establish sovereign authority over the entirety of Lebanese territory. Consequently, the agreement requires the disarmament of Hezbollah. Prior to this disarmament being complete, however, Israel will maintain a military presence in southern Lebanon. Following the signing of the accord, protests erupted in Lebanon among supporters of Hezbollah.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) welcomed the agreement. Wadephul posted on Bluesky on Saturday, saying the arrangement brings hope, strengthens the security of both states, relies on direct understanding, and offers the possibility of ending a decade-long conflict. He expressed deep gratitude to the United States and Marco Rubio for their mediation efforts, concluding that success now depends entirely on the implementation of the agreement.

The minister announced that Germany would support the process. He stressed that it is crucial for Lebanon to reliably enforce its state monopoly on violence, while clear security assurances for Israel are equally vital. Wadephul emphasized that only when all sides take responsibility can this process lead to stability, security, and enduring peace. He finished by appealing to all relevant actors, especially Hezbollah, urging them to behave constructively.
