China Ambassador Called to Berlin Amid Concerns Over Aid to Russian Invasion

The Chinese ambassador in Germany was urgently requested by the Foreign Office for a meeting on Thursday, according to reports. The central topic of discussion involved allegations that Russian soldiers are receiving training in China. These reports describe support for Russia coming from Chinese state actors, specifically the People’s Liberation Army.

Johann Wadephul (CDU), the Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, stated from the Foreign Office that these reports are “very worrying.” He emphasized the consistent German stance that Russia remains the greatest threat to Euro-Atlantic security. Consequently, any actions that enable Russia to continue its war against Ukraine are viewed as a direct threat to Germany’s own security, making China’s growing support for Russia’s aggressive war an issue of direct national concern.

The German government is making its severe apprehension about China’s support for Russia abundantly clear in all discussions with the Chinese side. Chancellor Friedrich Merz, for example, raised this issue directly with Chinese President Xi Jinping during his visit to China in February. The topic is also being intensively reviewed together with European partners. While the request for an urgent meeting constitutes a clear diplomatic protest, it does not yet represent a formal summons.
