The CDU is rallying its approximately 350,000 nationwide members to campaign in Saxony-Anhalt, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and Berlin, according to a report by the “Spiegel” based on an internal letter from the party headquarters.
This unprecedented call from the Konrad-Adenauer-Haus aims primarily to overcome the AfD’s lead in the polls through an intense door-to-door campaign in Saxony-Anhalt.
The team of General Secretary Carsten Linnemann and his deputy, Christina Stumpp, appealed to members, stating that they must “work with fellow volunteers to ensure that the CDU performs strongly.” Members are urged to lend support via campaign buses, at local campaign centers, or by participating in regional events. Every helping hand is considered vital, whether the volunteer is a student during semester breaks, a retired person, or a working professional on vacation.
The campaign also involves printed materials. The party headquarters outlined in a flyer what members can expect. Specifically, three volunteers from a regional branch are tasked with jointly organizing outreach in Saxony-Anhalt. The Konrad-Adenauer-Haus prefers that participants hold a Class B driver’s license, necessary for traveling with and caring for a volunteer van (Bulli). Ideally, CDU members would commit to a two-week campaign block, although a one-week commitment is also welcome.
During this time, members will be responsible for setting up campaign stands, coordinating events, distributing flyers, and knocking on doors. The overarching goal is to engage in conversations with local citizens.
