Thomas Schulze, the leading candidate for the BSW in Saxony-Anhalt, has outlined potential areas for cooperation with the AfD. Speaking to the news channel “Welt,” Schulze stated that their views align strongly with the AfD, particularly concerning Russian policy and affordable energy.
He explained that the BSW has consistently advocated for the termination of Russian sanctions as soon as it is in the state parliament. While acknowledging that sanctions are a federal matter and cannot be ended solely from Saxony-Anhalt, he believes the state can “push” for this goal. Furthermore, the party has long argued that industry must regain competitiveness, which requires the supply of low-cost energy, specifically oil and gas sourced from the cheapest providers. Schulze added that the AfD has also addressed this issue to the public. Regarding geopolitics, he emphasized the desire to pursue a diplomatic path concerning the Ukraine and the Russian question, noting that these shared priorities are why voters supported them.
However, Schulze stressed that the BSW is “not currently talking” about a coalition with the AfD. He maintained that the party’s stance has always been to maintain a constructive opposition, though he conceded that they are committed to bringing about changes in the country if possible. The implementation of these changes will unfold in the coming days.
The BSW continues to support the appointment of a non-partisan minister-president. They envision someone who might come from the business or cultural sectors, and the party has held discussions with church representatives. “We have ideas,” Schulze said, “and we will be discussing them with the various parties in the next few days.” He emphasized the significant division within the state, believing that a non-partisan head of government might be capable of healing the region.
Conversely, a CDU member leading the state government is not an option for Thomas Schulze. He stated that he cannot imagine it, pointing to the recent electoral defeat of the CDU in Saxony-Anhalt. He further interpreted this defeat as a significant indicator not just locally, but nationally, suggesting that Merz’s political career may be nearing its end.
