Lando Norris secured victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix, bringing the first triumph of the 2026 season to McLaren. The Brit crossed the finish line ahead of Max Verstappen and Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who also finished on the podium. Lewis Hamilton, who initially finished fourth, dropped to fifth behind Charles Leclerc due to a penalty. Nico Hülkenberg managed to score his first World Championship points of the season by finishing in ninth place.
The race began in an exciting fashion, with Oscar Piastri briefly taking the lead after Norris made an error in Turn 2. However, Norris quickly regained the top spot and continuously extended his lead. Meanwhile, Hamilton struggled with the soft tires and received a five-second penalty for overly fast driving in the pit lane. Antonelli, having started from seventh position, benefited from a smart pit strategy, securing third place.
Throughout the field, there were numerous battles for position, particularly involving the Racing Bulls and Nico Hülkenberg. The German driver delivered a strong performance, overtaking several competitors in the closing stages to climb into the points. George Russell and Lawson also managed to score points, while Piastri retired after experiencing a gearbox issue, losing a promising result.
The Grand Prix was defined by strategic decisions and tire management, with teams oscillating between one-stop and two-stop strategies. Despite the challenges on the track, McLaren’s victory with Norris sends a strong signal before the Formula 1 season enters its summer break.
