Nina Warken, head of the Chancellery for the CDU, affirmed that Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz will remain in his position regardless of the results of the East German state elections. Speaking on Thursday during the RTL and ntv program “Frühstart,” Warken stated plainly, “Friedrich Merz will remain Chancellor after that.”
She elaborated on the government’s current priorities, emphasizing that the federal government must now proceed with implementing the agreed-upon reform projects. The Chancellery head explained that major initiatives-including reforms related to retirement, care provisions, and the reduction of red tape-were discussed both before and during the summer recess, and that the government intends to push these projects forward.
The CDU politician stressed that Germany requires a functional and capable coalition. “We need a federal government that works together stably, drives the country forward, and jointly tackles reforms,” she noted. She added that maintaining this cooperative approach will be a key goal even after the state elections.
