Schwesig Explains Cancer-Related Withdrawal from SPD Roles in 2019

Manuela Schwesig, the Minister-President of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and a member of the SPD, explained that her decision in 2019 to step down from all federal party positions, including the post of Deputy Federal Chairwoman, was driven by her battle with cancer. Speaking in a candid discussion on the Politico Berlin-Playbook podcast, she clarified that she stepped back because she was seriously ill and needed to confront the difficult reality that managing numerous party roles would be incompatible with cancer treatment.

Schwesig emphasized that this move was never a rejection of the SPD, but rather a response to a “true emergency,” stating it was “a genuine fight for survival.” She stressed that the decision was rooted in deeply personal reasons. Though acknowledging it was both right and rational, she admitted it was extremely difficult, as she thoroughly enjoyed her involvement. While she had no intention of running for the party leadership, she noted that it is simply not her nature to “jettison oneself” during a challenging time.

Despite her personal health struggles, Schwesig did not categorically rule out a future role within the federal party. When asked if she would permanently relinquish any federal position, she referenced her current tenure, stating that she is running for re-election as Minister-President for the next five years. Furthermore, she appealed to her supporters, especially within the SPD, asking them to support her practically and through substantive issues, rather than through “personal discussions.”

Her illness is several years in the past now. Schwesig shared that the experience left her feeling both “stronger and more humble.” She attributed the strength to overcoming the disease and the humility to a newfound appreciation for health, noting that while one doesn’t think about it every day, facing the possibility of death is profoundly emotional and difficult.

Her emotions recently surged this week when her daughter started primary school. She regretted missing such major milestones in her children’s lives when she received her diagnosis, as her daughter had not even started school at that time. She expressed her strong wish to witness Julia’s enrollment. She concluded by saying these memories foster a deep sense of gratitude, helping her maintain a thankful outlook during challenging periods.
