CDU Secretary-General Franziska Hoppermann has called on the black-red coalition to quickly advance the planned reforms of the social systems following the state election in Saxony-Anhalt, urging that they avoid getting stuck in detailed debates.
Hoppermann told the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland that this is a state election, not a federal one. While federal budget discussions are set to begin next week, she stressed that the social systems must be made “future-proof.” She noted the urgency, adding, “It’s not easy. Reports on the nursing care insurance clearly show that we have to move forward now.”
The process requires laying the foundation for change. Labor Minister Bärbel Bas (SPD), for example, must now present a draft law regarding pension reform. Likewise, former Health Minister Nina Warken (CDU) submitted a draft health reform just weeks after a commission delivered its findings.
Hoppermann acknowledged that negotiations over specific points will naturally take place later within Bundestag factions and with the states. However, she insisted that a draft law is necessary first to establish a basis for discussion. She warned that questioning individual components of these reforms would not be helpful to any of the coalition partners.
