Poland’s Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski has issued a warning regarding the potential consequences should the AfD party continue to gain strength, particularly following its electoral success in Saxony-Anhalt. Speaking to the Handelsblatt, Sikorski confirmed that Poland welcomes increased military defense spending in Germany, provided that the nation remains guided by democratic principles.
“We want Germany, as Europe’s largest economy and under democratic leadership, to play a strong role in securing our common security,” the Minister stated. However, he cautioned: “We remember all too well what a re-militarized Germany could lead to when placed in the hands of a far-right, pro-Russian party-and that is precisely what the AfD represents.”
Meanwhile, the German federal government is aggressively expanding its defense expenditures, aiming to transform the Bundeswehr into “the conventionally strongest army in Europe.” This growing momentum, coupled with the AfD’s success, is also generating concern in France over the prospect of a militarily powerful yet Europe-hostile Germany.
