Sahra Wagenknecht, co-founder of BSW, has expressed support for electing an AfD member as the President of the State Parliament in Saxony-Anhalt. Speaking to Stern regarding the newly formed BSW parliamentary group in the Magdeburg Parliament, she stated, “Whether we elect someone depends naturally on the specific candidacy. But it is undisputed for us that the AfD, as the strongest faction by far, deserves the office of Parliament President.” The newly elected parliament of Saxony-Anhalt must convene by October 6th to select a president. Because the AfD is the largest faction, it holds the exclusive right to propose a candidate in the first vote. With 39 members, the AfD, together with the five BSW representatives, forms the necessary absolute majority in the 83-member parliament.
