Tobias Krull, a representative of the CDU in the state parliament, appears to have withdrawn his initial statement that he would abstain during a potential runoff election for the Minister-President of Saxony-Anhalt, should the AfD candidate Ulrich Siegmund be nominated. According to Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland, Krull first responded to the question of whether he would vote for Siegmund or abstain by stating: “No, and I will abstain.” However, he later revised his stance in a second written response that evening, stating, “Of course, I will not abstain, and I will vote against him.” The voting process requires a candidate to secure 42 votes in the first two rounds. If a majority is not achieved in both cases, the parliament must decide whether to end the term; otherwise, a third round takes place, where a simple majority of cast votes is sufficient. An abstention lowers the required vote count, thereby increasing the likelihood that the AfD faction’s votes will be enough to elect Siegmund as Minister-President.
