The German government is apparently looking to propose Dörte Dinger, a State Secretary under President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, for the position of Deputy Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP) in Rome. This information was reported by “Der Spiegel”, referencing diplomatic circles. Initially, Steinmeier had expressed a preference for Dinger to return to the Federal Foreign Office after his tenure ends next March, but Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) reportedly objected to this. The German government now sees prospects for the vice position following the appointment of Luke Lindberg as Executive Director, who currently serves as an Undersecretary in the US Department of Agriculture. Germany is among the main financial contributors to the World Food Programme, and Germans are currently underrepresented in senior leadership roles within the United Nations. The Federal Presidential Office stated that questions relating to government decisions should be directed to the government itself. The Federal Foreign Office declined to comment on the personnel matter.
