In Northwest Pakistan, a bombing attack on a mosque resulted in the deaths of at least 16 people, including five police officers, according to local authorities in Peshawar. The incident occurred when a vehicle packed with explosives rammed into the mosque’s entrance, which is situated near a police headquarters.
Following the explosion, a shooting clash ensued between the attackers and the security personnel, during which one assailant was killed. Provincial Police Chief Zulfikar Hameed later confirmed that the attack was a suicide bombing. The Pakistani government swiftly condemned the violence, and Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif extended his condolences while urging an accelerated rescue operation.
While no group has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, the region is actively contested by both a regional ISIL faction and the Taliban Pakistan (TTP), both of whom regularly target security forces. Tensions have risen in the border regions with Afghanistan in recent months. Islamabad has accused the Taliban of providing support to militant groups operating from Afghan territory, a claim Kabul has strongly denied.
