VfL Wolfsburg opened the sixth round of the 2. Bundesliga with a strong victory, defeating SV Darmstadt 98 5-1 on Friday evening. Elsewhere, the match saw a draw between SpVgg Greuther Fürth and 1. FC Magdeburg, resulting in a 1-1 stalemate.
At the Volkswagen-Arena, Wolfsburg took the lead early in the 14th minute when Alexander Bernhardsson slotted the ball past the inside of the post, following an assist from Jannik Reese. Darmstadt responded in the 29th minute, capitalizing on a mistake by Joakim Maehle, with Milan Smit leveling the score at 1-1. Just before the halftime break, Robert Glatzel restored the deficit with a header (40th minute).
After the break, Darmstadt had greater possession, but the momentum decisively shifted to Wolfsburg. Bernhardsson netted his second goal in the 61st minute, making it 3-1. Muhammed Damar scored his first goal for VfL Wolfsburg in the 67th minute, and Glatzel concluded the match with another header from a Reese cross in the 79th minute. With eleven points, Tobias Strobl’s team has temporarily climbed to fourth place, while Darmstadt has dropped to 17th position.
Meanwhile, at the Ronhof, Magdeburg started the match brightly. Emmanuel Iyoha put the visitors ahead in the fifth minute, finishing a long ball relayed by Herbert Bockhorn. Although Magdeburg controlled the game, Omar Sillah equalized for Fürth in the 20th minute, following a pass from Klaus. This goal remained valid only after a review by the video assistant regarding a potential offside call. The rest of the game was closely matched.
Magdeburg now sits in fifth place with ten points, while Fürth has picked up six points, moving up to tenth place.
