Despite the election results-which were devastating for the CDU, particularly in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern-the federal government asserts that it remains fully capable of taking action. This was stated by Deputy Government Spokesman Sebastian Hille to the dpa news agency on Monday.
When asked how these election outcomes would affect planned reforms, especially regarding the pension package, Hille referenced a statement made by CDU Chairman Friedrich Merz during the election evening. Hille confirmed, “We continue our reform course.” Merz had announced shortly after the initial forecasts on Sunday that he intended to pursue the reform process as both the CDU’s party chairman and potential Federal Chancellor.
It was not yet certain at the time of Merz’s declaration whether the CDU would lose its seats in the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state parliament. Furthermore, in Berlin, the Christian Democrats fell significantly behind The Left (Die Linke) in the second place.
The election results were slightly better for the SPD, which in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern could continue to govern with the Greens and The Left. However, the Social Democrats also achieved a historically poor result in Berlin.
