Following Bärbel Bas’ resignation as the SPD leader and Federal Minister of Labour, her successor in the ministry appears to be already settled. Multiple media outlets reported on Monday that Alexander Schweitzer, the former Prime Minister of Rheinland-Pfalz, is slated to join the cabinet. Schweitzer currently serves as the head of the SPD parliamentary group in the Mainz state parliament.
Bas announced her resignation that morning, citing both personal reasons and public attacks from her coalition partner as contributing factors. She elected to relinquish both her government and party roles because she currently does not possess the strength required to fully execute her duties in a short timeframe.
