Comedian and author Hape Kerkeling has commented on a petition signed by almost 155,000 people advocating for him to be elected as the next Federal President. Speaking to Spiegel, he stated that he did not want to shut down the idea of a queer person becoming the head of state, noting that while the effort would certainly not succeed, it would generate discussions beneficial to a free society.
Regarding his own interest in holding such an office, Kerkeling remains reserved, emphasizing that securing the role would depend on the CDU. He mentioned that the CDU would eventually elect someone according to their criteria and expressed his hope that the choice would fall to the “right woman.”
More recently, Kerkeling appeared at a hearing in the Thuringian State Parliament concerning a potential ban on the AfD. The native of Recklinghausen strongly advocated for the ban but also held voters accountable. He stated that simply criticizing those who vote for right-wing extremists is insufficient, adding that if people want the lions to enter the arena, they must also be prepared to see blood.
Kerkeling’s commitment to democracy is rooted in his family history; the entertainer’s grandfather was persecuted politically by the National Socialists. This history heightened his awareness of extreme ideologies. At the same time, he expresses gratitude for the country, citing how his upbringing as a working-class child allowed him to achieve success and benefit from freedom of speech. He now feels a desire to give something back to the nation.
