Union Gaining Ground, but Merz Remains Unpopular in latest Polls

In a weekly poll conducted by Forsa for the broadcasters RTL and ntv, the Union party has once again gained ground, increasing its support by one percentage point to reach 21%. Meanwhile, the AfD remains the strongest party, holding its position at 27%, which narrows the lead over the CDU and CSU to six percentage points. The Greens lost a point, now standing at 16%. The values for the SPD (13%), the Left party (11%), and the FDP (4%) remained unchanged. Other parties, including the BSW, combined account for 8%. The share of non-voters and undecided citizens remains high at 25%, surpassing the level seen in the last federal election (17.9%).

Regarding perceived political competence, the AfD still leads with 14%. The Union is the most trusted party by 10% of citizens in solving Germany’s problems, an increase of one percentage point from the previous week. The Greens maintain six percent, closely ahead of the SPD, which declined by one point to five percent. The Left party also holds steady at five percent. Notably, a majority of 57% still does not believe that any single party is capable of solving the country’s problems.

Satisfaction with Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) saw a slight increase compared to the previous week, though the level remains very low. Twelve percent of citizens reported being satisfied with his work, a one percentage point rise. Conversely, the percentage of dissatisfied voters dropped by one point to 86%. Even among supporters of the CDU and CSU, a majority remains unhappy, with 58% rating his work negatively and only 40% being satisfied.

A total of 2,501 individuals were surveyed between October 20th and October 26th, 2026, for this poll.
