Frei Promises Cooperation with Any Israeli Leader Amid Nation’s Existential Stress

Thorsten Frei, the leader of the CDU parliamentary group, has responded cautiously to the uncertain election unfolding in Israel. Speaking on Wednesday morning, he stated that the race is currently very close, but everyone must respect whatever result comes through. Regardless of who wins, Frei affirmed that he would “work well with any Israeli Prime Minister,” stressing that cooperation with Israel remains fundamentally central to Germany.

When addressing Benjamin Netanyahu’s apparent success in the midst of global instability and conflict, Frei noted the significant stress placed on Israeli society since the October 7, 2023 massacre, pointing out that the nation is highly polarized. He stated that this reaction is understandable given that Israel is facing existential threats both from within and externally. Reflecting on this complex situation, Frei added that when assessing the circumstances from a German perspective, extreme caution is necessary.
