Emergency services in Castilla-La Mancha reported that at least 39 people were killed in a severe train accident near Toledo, Spain, on Wednesday. The collision occurred between the towns of Los Yébenes and Urda when a Renfe high-speed train crashed into an Iryo train.
The incident happened at 8:54 AM. The AVE 2080, traveling from Madrid to Seville, collided with the Iryo 6076 traveling in the opposite direction. The crash resulted in two carriages of the Iryo train derailing. Contributing to the accident, the train was operating with blocked side signaling due to a malfunction in the LZB system.
A large-scale rescue effort was immediately launched. Response included firefighters from Alcázar de San Juan and Orgaz, along with multiple disaster relief units. Three rescue helicopters and two mobile intensive care units were deployed to treat the injured. As a result of the catastrophe, the high-speed rail line connecting Madrid and Andalusia was temporarily closed.
