Mona Neubaur, the Minister for Economic Affairs in North Rhine-Westphalia (Greens), welcomed Evonik’s refusal of the takeover bid from BASF. Neubaur told the “Rheinische Post” (Saturday edition) that while conversations between companies are their own decision, her administration’s position is clear: Evonik is a strong, viable company and a vital component of the North Rhine-Westphalia industrial landscape, and this status must continue. Consequently, she stated that she opposes any acquisition of the company.
The Minister cautioned closely monitoring the current developments surrounding Evonik and BASF, emphasizing that the jobs and the company’s independent development must be protected. This protection must apply not only to production and research but also to administrative functions. She argued that strategic independence, stable operating conditions, and co-determination should serve as the basis for innovation and investment within North Rhine-Westphalia. According to the Green politician, her party will strongly advocate for these principles.
The Evonik board had already turned down the increased offer made by BASF on Friday.
