A former leader of the Christian Social Union (CSU) has publicly criticized recent attacks by prominent party members against Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf, a candidate for the Federal Constitutional Court.
Erwin Huber, in an interview with “Der Spiegel”, argued that the public pressure exerted on Professor Brosius-Gersdorf by figures such as Markus Söder, Alexander Dobrindt and Dorothee Bär represents a “tactical error” that is hindering potential resolutions to the ongoing dispute. He suggested a period of de-escalation, advising, “Now it’s time to cool down until September. I recommend everyone just remain silent; that would be helpful.
The disagreement surrounding the Constitutional Court candidate continues to deadlock discussions between the Union and the Social Democratic Party. The CSU, in particular, has consistently voiced concerns regarding Professor Brosius-Gersdorf. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has previously suggested she withdraw from consideration, while Research Minister Dorothee Bär has underscored the importance of demonstrating a capacity for critique. Furthermore, Bavarian Minister President Markus Söder has expressed reservations about potential damage to the court’s reputation, suggesting minimal prospects for Professor Brosius-Gersdorf’s confirmation.
