Ahead of the Berlin state election, the AfD has reaffirmed its intentions to reform how state-owned apartments are allocated in the city. Speaking to RBB Inforadio on Monday, state chairwoman Kristin Brinker highlighted that many people working in vital professions face extremely difficult prospects when trying to secure subsidized housing.
Brinker emphasized that the focus is on the citizens who sustain the city-those employed in jobs crucial to Berlin’s functioning, including healthcare workers, skilled tradespeople, police officers, and firefighters. According to Brinker, these individuals typically do not earn exceptionally high incomes, meaning they cannot afford housing in the free market, yet they are often overlooked even in the subsidized housing program. She stressed that this situation “simply cannot be.”
Under the AfD’s proposed policy, state-owned real estate companies will be required to distribute free apartments using a points-based system in the future. In addition to profession and social criteria, the length of time a person has lived in Berlin will also factor into the decision-making process.
