Bundeswehr’s Digital Radio Upgrade Stalls: Less Than 1,000 Out of 16,000 Vehicles Modernized

Significant challenges persist in a crucial defense project for the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr): the transition to digital radio technology. The military is tasked with equipping 16,000 vehicles, ranging from main battle tanks to standard VW buses, with new radio systems. However, according to “Die Zeit”, less than 1,000 of these upgrades have currently been completed.

The project, known as “Digitalization of Land-Based Operations” (D-LBO), is considered a “decisive factor in modern warfare” by the military, with an estimated cost exceeding 20 billion euros. Despite this high strategic importance, reports citing multiple sources within the Armed Forces indicate that the trajectory is worrying. The revised plan for the current year projects only a small, three-digit number of completed upgrades, falling far short of previous expectations.
