According to Green party leader Franziska Brantner, a potential cabinet reshuffle following the resignation of CDU Parliamentary Group Leader Jens Spahn could also present an opportunity for Friedrich Merz (CDU). Speaking in a Sunday ARD summer interview, Brantner suggested that Merz is now in a position to remove anyone from the cabinet who possesses “manual weaknesses” or is ideologically intractable. She believes this moment calls for a complete reset, stating, “We are starting afresh.”
Spahn stepped down from his role as parliamentary group leader on Saturday. His resignation followed massive criticism triggered by the disclosure of his fatherhood, as he and his partner reportedly utilized a surrogate mother abroad, despite Spahn having previously advocated within Germany for maintaining the ban on surrogacy.
As a potential successor, CDU leader Thorsten Frei (CDU) is being considered. This development would necessitate a restructuring of the federal cabinet. Merz acknowledged this possibility on Sunday during a ZDF broadcast, saying it “could be an opportunity to reconsider the composition of the federal government.”
Brantner deemed Spahn’s resignation overdue. She informed ARD that Spahn had repeatedly lost credibility in recent years, concluding that the surrogacy controversy was “the last straw that made the bucket overflow.” The Green leader also referenced the “mask scandal,” adding that Spahn had maintained closeness to individuals described as “democracy destroyers” in the orbit of US President Donald Trump.
