Federal Member of Parliament and current CDU Treasurer Franziska Hoppermann is set to become the next Secretary-General of the party, succeeding Carsten Linnemann. This appointment was announced by Chancellor and CDU leader Friedrich Merz during high-level party meetings on Monday, according to multiple media reports. The position needed to be filled because Linnemann is moving into the cabinet as the new Federal Minister for Health. Hoppermann was already widely considered the favorite for the role. Previously, the name of Johannes Steiniger, the CDU Secretary-General for Rhineland-Palatinate, had also been mentioned. Steiniger’s state association had recently shown significant dissatisfaction with Merz following the controversy surrounding the dismissal of Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder. With the decision to select Hoppermann, the reshuffling within the party and the government is progressing. However, further changes in personnel are anticipated, particularly among the second-tier cabinet posts.
