Christoph Werner, the head of the pharmacy chain DM, is advocating for a relaxation of the prescription drug requirements for certain medications. Speaking to newspapers affiliated with Funke-Mediengruppe, the Chairman of DM’s management stated that drugs are no longer manufactured by pharmacists but are instead pre-packaged.
Werner referenced several other countries where pharmacy regulations have already been loosened regarding medication availability. In these nations, many medicines are offered at significantly lower prices. He also argued that the German healthcare system requires innovation if it is to remain current. Otherwise, he warns, there is a risk of losing purchasing power, which could lead to a decline in the standard of living in Germany.
However, Werner emphasized that there are no plans to allow prescriptions to be redeemed at DM-Med, the company’s online pharmacy. He confirmed that for the time being, their offerings will remain focused only on self-medication products.
