FIFA President Gianni Infantino has openly acknowledged the need for reform and proposed commissioning an independent external review of the world football organization’s decision-making processes.
In a letter addressed to the FIFA Council and the presidents of the 211 member associations, Infantino stated that concerns had arisen regarding the handling of a previously proposed, but since withdrawn, investment plan. Following this, he announced that he would consult the Council on whether an independent external audit should be commissioned to examine the current governance framework for major strategic initiatives. Furthermore, he intends to engage in dialogue with confederations, member associations, and other stakeholders to strengthen FIFA’s decision-making procedures. This review would aim to clarify who holds authority over significant initiatives and how transparency and accountability can be improved.
This proposal surfaced after Infantino faced heavy criticism for his plan to sell 20 percent of FIFA’s commercial rights to private investors. This plan was ultimately pulled back in July amidst resistance and threats of boycott. Infantino explained that the plan had never been fully presented to the Council or the member associations, and confirmed its withdrawal. He also stated that the views of member associations on proposals or governance matters have sometimes not been properly addressed by FIFA.
