Despite the failed referendum on the Olympic Games in Hamburg, the federal government is maintaining its commitment to the idea of hosting Summer Olympics in Germany. Vice government spokesman Steffen Meyer told the dts Nachrichtenagentur on Wednesday that while the democratic decision in Hamburg is fully respected, the government wants to point out that several other candidates are in the running. He noted that Munich, the Ruhr region, and Berlin are also viable options, and consequently, the government looks forward optimistically to the continuation of the selection process. “We want the Olympic Games in Germany, and we support the DOSB’s application” Meyer stated. He further highlighted that there was a clear mandate in Munich and the Ruhr region in favor of hosting the games. “As I said, it is now moving into the next phase, and we look forward to it”.
