Greens Slam Pistorius’ Plan to Reintroduce Mandatory Reserve Duties

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) is planning to reinstate mandatory participation for reservists in Bundeswehr exercises. This proposed legislation is currently awaiting approval by the Cabinet.

However, The Greens have criticized this draft law, which calls for an expanded deployment of reservists. Defence policy spokesperson Sara Nanni told the “Rheinische Post” that when individuals volunteer for military service today with high motivation, they risk later having no choice but to comply with reserve duties. According to Nanni, the draft prioritizes short-term gains over achieving long-term public acceptance. Furthermore, she expressed doubts that this measure will actually boost the level of motivation required to increase the strength of the active military force.
