German security authorities are currently examining intelligence related to potential terrorist preparations in Germany, in light of the ongoing conflict involving Iran. This information was reported by the “Handelsblatt”, citing a spokesperson for the Federal Interior Ministry.
A ministry spokesperson confirmed that federal security agencies continue to maintain extremely close observation of developments in the Near and Middle East. They are investigating various tips concerning suspected espionage or the planning of possible terrorist attacks. The authorities are working in close coordination with individual German states and international partners to continuously assess the current threat level.
Despite the renewed escalation of the conflict between the United States and Iran, the government’s current assessment indicates that this will not lead to a worsening of Germany’s already high risk profile.
The immediate background to this heightened scrutiny is the release of an Iranian “retaliation list,” which notably included Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU). The ministry spokesperson confirmed that the list, along with the threats it contained, has been duly noted. Consequently, the protective measures implemented by the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) are under continuous review and are adjusted as needed, depending on the specific incident and situation.
Furthermore, the Interior Ministry highlighted Iran’s asymmetrical strategy. This strategy involves utilizing intelligence services for espionage and intimidation against regime opponents abroad, as well as mobilizing known supporters of Iran. The Ministry defined the so-called “Axis of Resistance” to include the Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah, the Palestinian terrorist organization Hamas, and the Yemeni Houthi rebels.
