In the second matchday of the new Bundesliga season, Hamburger SV suffered a heavy 0-5 defeat against 1. FSV Mainz 05 in their opening home fixture.
Mainz took the lead early in the 19th minute when Sheraldo Becker intercepted a misplaced pass from Remberg and converted the opportunity in cold blood. Just before halftime, Phillipp Mwene extended Mainz’s advantage to 2-0 by driving a low pass from Becker past the far post.
In the second half, Mainz continued their dominant performance. Phillip Tietz scored the third goal in the 48th minute, following a cross from Becker down the right flank. Despite having a comfortable lead, the visitors remained aggressive, netting their fourth goal in the 83rd minute. Tietz registered his second goal of the day, tapping in past Heuer Fernandes after being set up by a wide pass from Lee. The match concluded in stoppage time with a final goal from Hamburger SV’s former player, Ransford Königsdörffer.
HSV struggled throughout the entire match to engage and was unable to create clear scoring opportunities. Conversely, Mainz displayed a mature and professional performance that earned them a well-deserved away victory. Despite making some substitutions during the second half, HSV could not turn the tide, leaving the team without a point after two fixtures.
