Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) held a phone conversation with Argentine President Javier Milei on Friday. This meeting was confirmed by German government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius, as well as by the Argentine government.
Speaking later that evening, Kornelius stated that both leaders emphasized the friendly relationship between Germany and Argentina. According to the spokesperson, the Chancellor and the President agreed to deepen cooperation in the future, particularly in the areas of economy, energy, and security, including within the framework of the G20.
The office of the Argentine President did not offer any specific details regarding the content of the call.
It is worth noting that Merz has previously criticized Milei on several occasions. Back in 2024, when he was still an opposition leader, he harshly stated: “What this president is doing there ruins the country and tramples on the people”.
