Public polling stations for the municipal elections in Lower Saxony opened at 8 a.m. Approximately 6.3 million eligible voters are called upon to decide on the composition of over 2,000 different local parliaments for the next five years. Concurrently, direct elections are taking place for district administrators (Landräte), mayors, and the chief mayor of Hannover, as well as for the regional president of Hannover. Following a reform of municipal law, these terms are now eight years instead of the previous five. Additionally, 16-year-olds are eligible to vote in the municipal elections in Lower Saxony.
Between the state parliamentary elections in Saxony-Anhalt and the elections in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the voting in Lower Saxony is considered an important barometer of public mood, and it is being closely watched, even in political Berlin. A poor performance by the CDU could further pressure Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Furthermore, there is significant anticipation regarding how the AfD will fare in this western German region. It remains unclear when the nationwide results will be announced.
